Flag Facts Friday
South Africa
The current flag of South African was originally adopted in 1994. It's divided into sections with a green Y-shape, bordered with white and yellow. One section of the flag is black, one is blue, and one is red. The original flag design originated with Frederick Brownell.
The colors of the South Africa flag are notable because they don't actually represent anything. The blue, red and white on the flag come from a previous version of the flag, which took its colors from the flag of the Netherlands. The black, yellow, and green are actually derived from the flag of the African National Congress.
However, the design of the flag does have meaning. The Y shape is actually meant to represent unity in South African society in the aftermath of Apartheid. This is a sign of freedom in South Africa for all people.
